Several named 18thC New England molding planes have been recorded with heels that were made with a pronounced ridge at the juncture of the rear body chamfer and the upper heel end chamfer. These planes typically have standard non-rounded toes ... but several (notedly S Doggett (Sr.)) also appear to have been made with a rounded toe. For many if not most of these named craftsmen, their planes are typically found with standard non-ridged heels ... and only a sub-set were made with the ridged heels. This entry on the subject of ridged heels is meant to be a gathering place for study ... a work in progress.

B mark S*Dean, 10", ridged heel with standard toe. Multiple planes reviewed with ridged and standard heels observed.

Benjamin Waterman, ridged heel with standard toe

S Doggett (Sr.), ridged heel with rounded toe. (Multiple examples reviewed with most having standard toes and heels.

The subset with a ridged heel also have the heavily rounded toe.) See the entry for Samuel Sr. in the Gallery Section for additional examples.

H Healy,  ridged heel with rounded toe. (Multiple examples reviewed .... most having a standard toe.

(The presentation of visually based elements (scale imprints, scale drawings, etc.) is a challenge, especially when moving from the printed page to the realm of an electronic medium. For reference, the original GAWP 5, CAWP, BARS and SOJ publications had pages which were 8-1/2" in width.)
