Molding Plane Sequence ... A Summary (Editor's nomenclature used to provide a working structure.)

 

Early Phase - First State (length?, birch, name only, wedge style??, flutes on reverse, wide flat chamfers)

Early Phase - Second State (9 5/8”, birch, name only, noting that this wedge, the “early, relieved” wedge shown in GAWP5 might not be original, simple turn out on reverse, wide flat 9/16” chamfers, tight curve at top of heel with ridge)

Later Early Phase (~10” (9 15/16”), birch name only, wedge is replaced, separate gouge cut on reverse, tight curve at top of heel with ridge) (This sequence designation is somewhat tentative at present) Similar gouge detail found on H Healy, S Felch, U Clap in Worcester Co., which are probably 1785 to 1790.

 

Early Middle Phase (~10”, birch, name only, std wedge, simple turn out on reverse. Cannot see the heel clearly) (In general, the possibility of narrow body widths dictating the use of the name only marking)

Middle Phase (~10”, birch, name and Lanesboro’ location, std wedge, simple turn out on reverse)

 

Later Phase (9 7/16”, name and Lanesboro’ location, std wedge, simple turn out on reverse, birch and beech)
