An alternate candidate to GAWP5 (especially for imprint B)

• Aaron Newell, (1769-1836) Lanesboro and Charlton, MA

Cabinet maker, joiner and chairmaker from period ad dating from 1795 through 1808 ... and into the 1830s.

Working in the shop of Ebenezer Newell in Lanesboro, 1795 

Working in Charlton by at least 1803.

Born in Dudley, MA and died in Charlton, MA.

Parents Samuel and Rachel.

Married Ellen Crossman, children: Allen, John, Sylvester, Charles and George born between 1804 and 1812.

Although not yet proved, it is likely that Ebenezer was Aaron's uncle.

 

• Asa Newell (1768 - 1845) also in Charlton, was cited by GAWP5 as the probable candidate for A Newell. Aside from the strong argument for Aaron due to his link to Ebenezer in Lanesboro, Asa was only found as a yeoman in period deeds and court documents. (Based on the editor's research efforts.) The second A Newell (B) imprint is specifically noted with respect to Aaron as the rabbet plane with this imprint was found near Lanesboro.​

       Possible arguments against Aaron Newell, include 1) the A and B wedges for A Newell are not similar to the                   typical E Newell wedge and 2) the A and B A Newell imprints are not similar Ebenezer's. One possible offsetting             mitigation is that Ebenezer is a generation older than Aaron.
