A Gillet

Abel Gillet was born ca 1774 and died in 1852, Norwich, VT.

"Thurston's Genealogies" reports Abel's marriage to Keziah (1795) and his joiner trade in Norwich, NH.

His parents were Israel and Susanna.

The VT location fits with the reporting of a 18th C carpenter's chest in PlaneTalk XI-4, 1987. The chest was found and used in the construction of a ca 1795, New Haven, VT house known as the Moses Stow house. The chest, with its' contents intact, had ten plus 18th C Colonial / Federal planes including six early planes by Jo Fuller.  Another plane was a 14" long toted shoe nail peg plane that was marked A Gillet.

GAWP5 noted the A Gillet molders had Sleeper-like wedges but no Gillets were found in late 18th C / early 19th C deeds from Essex, Co. and Middlesex, Co., MA. Few Gillets were found in deeds from Worcester Co., MA, none being "A" Gillet. Most "A" Gillets in the 1800 US census (26) were from CT, NY and VT.

A Gillet  11 1/2" long dado made of beech.

(The presentation of visually based elements (scale imprints, scale drawings, etc.) is a challenge, especially when moving from the printed page to the realm of an electronic medium. For reference, the original GAWP 5, CAWP, BARS and SOJ publications had pages which were 8-1/2" in width.)
