Biographical Information
Georg Phillip Reiher known as Philip Royer was born in 1750. His birth is recorded in the Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran churchbook set down in 1751. The churchbook, gives the names of the members of the congregation as well as the names of their wives and children. It begins with the names of the Elders. His father Joh. Michael Reiher is listed first. In this account, Joh. Michael reports that his son Georg Phillip was born in 1750 to his second wife, Maria Catherina, who died that same year.
His headstone is incorrectly inscribed 1752. DAR and SAR have single-sourced their records and they reflect the date on the headstone. Published texts on the Royer family correctly report the date as 1750. His sister's headstone is also inscribed with the wrong birth year which is not uncommon.
Philip Royer served in the PA Militia in the Revolutionary war. One of his grandsons told that he was taken prisoner and confined in a prisonship at New York. When released, he returned home bare-headed and in rags. He was called out twice afterwards to serve.

In colonial and early America, prior to civil records, there was no set spelling for Germanic surnames. Names were often spelled according to how they sounded in "German" American records or anglicized in "English" American records.
There are many spellings of the surname found in original source records. Among the more common are: Reiher, Rëyer, Reyer, Reier, Reyher, Rayer, Royer (anglicized).
Like most individuals of "Germanic" ancestory, he probably seldomly used both vornames (forenames). He is found refered to by his rufname (call name), Philip in most period records.
Note: Surname spellings Reyer and Royer have been included in the "Last Name" field of the memorial in accordance with Find a Grave guidelines: Last Name as you would find it on the tombstone. If the interred had more than one last name, they may be added to the last name field. Separate each last name with a space. Our Memorial Search will search all names in the last name field.
Gravesite Details: Birthyear on headstone is incorrect.
