In considering a craftsman-based candidate, the question needs to be asked ... are there a number of I Day planes that share common design features? I.E. Did I Day make some of the planes or are the I Day marked planes just a random collection? It is hoped that the reporting of additional I Day planes will help in this assessment.

Isaac Day, (Ipswich) and Westford, MA, 1st tier candidate. 1800 deed, Westford, MA, housewright.

I Day Planes

I Day 30" birch jointer, small mark, heavy round chamfers, rounded top wedge, decorative tote.

I Day beech smoother, small mark, heavy round chamfers, angled top wedge. (The smoother wedge style is later than the jointer wedge style.) The heavy round body chamfers, the body end chamfers and stops and the wedge abutment cheek chamfers match between the jointer and the smoother.

I Day fruitwood 11" rabbet, small mark, flat chamfers. The heavy flat chamfers of this rabbet do not match those of the above jointer and smoother, but the chamfer stops which are a simple turnout, do match. The birch wedge matches the wedge style shown in GAWP5, but the two molders mentioned in GAWP5 have flutes, which this rabbet does not have.

(The presentation of visually based elements (scale imprints, scale drawings, etc.) is a challenge, especially when moving from the printed page to the realm of an electronic medium. For reference, the original GAWP 5, CAWP, BARS and SOJ publications had pages which were 8-1/2" in width.)
