Earlier imprint on a plane also having the J Hart imprint found in GAWP5.

GAWP5 cited Jonathan Hart as the possible craftsman in Riverton, RI ca. 1830. Here, another craftsman in PA, John Hart Jr. in Lancaster Co.,  is added as an alternative.

J Hart

GAWP5 cites Jonathan Hart of Riverton, RI as the possible candidate associated with the curved, later imprint shown in GAWP5. That plane was a beech jack plane with a centered tote and shallow round chamfers, ca 1830.

This earlier J Hart mark was reported by Nate Walter from a 9" beech molder found in PA some 20 to 25 years ago.  It has rounded chamfers and ca 1820 chamfer stops. John Hart Jr., a joiner in Lancaster County, PA, in 1846, is put forward as a possible, alternative candidate. (See I Hart for two other earlier PA craftsmen, ca 1800. Within the I Hart search, only PA craftsmen were investigated.)

9" beech tongue plane found in PA.

(The presentation of visually based elements (scale imprints, scale drawings, etc.) is a challenge, especially when moving from the printed page to the realm of an electronic medium. For reference, the original GAWP 5, CAWP, BARS and SOJ publications had pages which were 8-1/2" in width.)
