Historical Narrative:

46 Salem Street; Griffin - Hammond House -

1790s – 1970

Site with History;

On this site stood the William & Betsey Griffin Jr. homestead built in the late 18th Century and was razed in 1971.

The Griffin Homestead location is important in understanding the neighborhood development and land holdings of abutting properties.

William Griffin Jr. was born Sept. 6, 1766 in Newbury, MA son of William & Mary (Howard) Griffin. William, a Yeoman, joined the South Church on April 1, 1792 (#925), married Sept. 4, 1794 to Betsey Holt b. Aug. 7, 1763 dau. of Jonathan Holt. The 1810 census list three household residents, one a girl between 10-15 years of age. As the 1800 census lists only two in the home, the girl (daughter?) Betsey would be ten. Charlotte H. Abbott’s Griffin genealogy states. “Mrs. “Bill” kept a boarding house and when the boarders ate everything in sight, she would say “How nice! I guessed just right.” Wife Betsey died Feb, 7, 1827 age 62, (59 GR2) William was excommunicated from the church on March 6, 1830 and died May 24, 1830 age 63 (64 GR2). He is however buried in South Parish Cemetery. William’s will gave his estate to Betsey Town, mother of George F. and William G. Hammond, and now wife of Ezra Hammond.

pg 25 "The Methodist History of the Wyoming Conference states, that “in 1822, William Griffin, a brother of Mother Lee, received his local preacher’s license, and resided at The Corners. He was a cabinetmaker by trade, and made coffins out of the native woods. It was not uncommon for him to act as both undertaker and minister at a funeral service. He was a very useful local preacher."
